Group Therapy
Group therapy is not about sitting in a circle and taking turns. It is about shared space, shared stories, and the kind of growth that comes from being understood. At Zeam Health & Wellness, we create group therapy for mental health with purpose. We bring people together to talk and heal.
In Sacramento, Roseville, and Folsom, we run therapy groups that give people a way forward. Each group is guided by licensed therapists who do more than lead. They create room for trust, insight, and progress that feels earned.
What Is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a type of psychotherapy. One or two therapists meet with a small group of people who face similar challenges. Sessions often last between 60 and 120 minutes, held once a week. Some people attend group therapy on its own, while others pair it with individual counseling.
Some groups focus on specific diagnoses like PTSD or depression. Others help people build social skills, manage stress, or work through grief. Many of our clients also attend groups to feel less alone in what they are carrying.
We currently offer therapy groups for:
- Depression and anxiety
- Bipolar disorder and mood regulation
- PTSD and trauma recovery
- Social anxiety and isolation
- Life transitions, including parenting, divorce, and loss

How Therapy Groups Work
Every group has its own shape. Some follow a clear structure, while others unfold through conversation. However, no group happens by accident. Our clinical team matches each participant with a group that fits based on readiness and shared goals.
You might find yourself in a skills-based group, practicing emotional regulation with others. You can also find yourself in a process group, where members reflect on their relationships and patterns in real time. Most sessions begin with a check-in, followed by deeper discussion or structured activities led by the therapist.
Techniques may include:
Guided reflections and open feedback
Communication roleplay
Group journaling or visualization
Education on specific mental health strategies
The Benefits of Group Therapy
People often come to the group feeling nervous. That changes quickly. When you hear someone else put words to what you have been feeling, it hits differently. You realize your pain is not as rare or as shameful as it once seemed.
You Find Out You Are Not the Only One
It is common to feel isolated by mental health challenges. Group therapy disrupts that narrative. The more honest people are, the more others nod in quiet recognition. That moment of “me too” can be more healing than any lecture.
Support Comes From All Sides
In a group setting, the therapist is not the only voice that matters. Peers play a role. People share ideas, encouragement, and stories that speak directly to what you are going through.
You Get to Practice Being Real
Therapy groups are places to try out new ways of speaking, listening, and relating. You start to notice your default moves. Maybe you overshare to avoid silence. Whatever the pattern, this is where you see it. And slowly, you shift it.
You Learn How Others See You
Sometimes, what holds us back is invisible until someone reflects it back. Group therapy creates safe, honest feedback loops. That can be uncomfortable but also freeing. Clients often leave with more clarity, less self-doubt, and a stronger sense of self.
You Carry the Group With You
The impact does not end when the session does. As one therapist put it: “The group becomes your net.” Knowing people will ask how it went gives you the courage to try something new. Even on hard days, that support stays with you.
Our Therapy Group Formats
We offer several types of groups. Some are short-term. Others are open-ended. All are designed to help people move forward at a pace that feels right.
Cognitive Behavioral Groups
These groups teach practical tools for managing thoughts, emotions, and reactions. They are structured and action-oriented.
Interpersonal Process Groups
These are less structured. The focus is on relationships: how you show up, how you connect, how you pull away.
Psychoeducation and Skills Groups
Here, you learn the “why” behind your symptoms and what to do about them. This is where DBT, emotion regulation, and stress reduction skills are taught and practiced.
Support Groups
These focus on shared experience. Whether you are navigating grief, parenting stress, or recovery from trauma, these groups create space for what is too heavy to carry alone.
What to Expect From Zeam Therapy Groups
Before joining, we set up an intake to understand what you are working through and what kind of group would be a good fit. Groups are usually made up of six to ten people. We keep them small so everyone has room to speak and be heard.
Most groups are closed, which means the same people meet week after week. That creates safety. Some are open, where new members can join over time. We will let you know what to expect.
Sessions take place in comfortable, private rooms designed for real conversation. We also offer virtual group options for those who qualify.

Is Group Therapy as Effective as One-on-One?
For many conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more, group therapy is just as effective as individual sessions.
In some cases, it can work faster because you are not just talking to a therapist. You are seeing yourself through the eyes of others.
That does not mean the group replaces everything. Many clients do both. Others use a group as a bridge when one-on-one care feels stalled.
How to Find Therapy Groups Near You
Typing ‘therapy groups near me’ into a search bar might bring up too many options or not enough context. At Zeam, our team walks you through the options available across our Sacramento, Folsom, and Roseville offices.
We match you with a group that makes sense for where you are. That includes specialized groups for:
- Veterans navigating trauma
- Women in postpartum recovery
- Adults dealing with chronic stress, burnout, or life transitions
